The first phase of the South Beach diet usually lasts two weeks and is basically an ‘induction period’ designed to let you adapt to your new diet. Phase 1 remains the most difficult for beginners as they show withdrawal symptoms when delicacies they had been enjoying till now are no more permitted.
Difference between Feeling Hungry and Craving
South Beach aficionados generally boast that you won’t feel hungry if you are on this diet. Considering the quantity of diet food you are allowed to have, this is not false. Note that hunger is different from craving. You are hungry if you go weak having not eaten something. But it is craving when you can very well do without something. You won’t be hungry, promise. But you will definitely crave for things you could eat before starting your diet.
First Week – So Important!
In Phase 1, all unhealthy carbohydrates such as pasta, rice, bread, refined flour, etc are taboo. So are items containing sugar – such as carbonated drinks, candies, soda, milkshakes and ice cream, etc. Without such items, the initial two weeks may seem like eternity, but if you are resolute and persevering, such cravings and uneasiness generally begin to subside after the end of first week. By the end of second week, that is the end of Phase 1, you should be quite ready for Phase 2. As a pleasant surprise, these items will re-enter your diet in Phase 2.
You are on diet for Your Own Sake
Coming over your cravings is an exercise in will power and takes determined, deliberate effort. In order to be able to win over your cravings, challenge yourself that you will not consume anything you are prohibited to consume, even when nobody is looking. Remember, you are not on a diet for anybody else but for your own sake. When you experience strong pangs of craving, simple exercise your will power and distract your mind to some other subject or topic.
Explore new varieties – it’s the time!
This is not to say that you cannot have a variety of food in your diet – before you begin your diet, it is a good idea to stock up as many varieties of South Beach diet as you want. This is also a great opportunity for experimentation. Try new things and combinations you would not otherwise consume. Add to your regular choices and explore new South Beach recipes.
Phase 1 may seem like a steep, uphill climb but trust me; it will begin to get better with time. And we all know how the view is from a mountain top!
